Robert Kenyon Named The Next Door’s 2024 Philanthropist of the Year
The Next Door Inc. (TNDI) is honored to announce Robert "Bob” Kenyon as the recipient of our 2024 Philanthropist of the Year award. This recognition celebrates Bob’s commitment to our community, his devotion to philanthropy, and the inspiration he is to those around him.
After many years rafting and kayaking western rivers and oceans, and a stint in Nicaragua with Veterans for Peace, a chance meeting while riding his horse in Idaho inspired Bob to move to the Columbia Gorge in 1993. Now, at the impressive age of 85 years young, Bob enjoys the Columbia River with a daily cold plunge from the spring to fall seasons. But it isn’t just the beauty our area has to offer that Bob is passionate about.
Besides being a supporter of The Next Door, Bob's philanthropy also includes the Mid-Columbia Community Action Council, which began when he was drawn to the organization’s pallet transitional housing program (now The Annex). He also contributes to the Columbia Gorge Community College Foundation, to help provide scholarships for deserving students and alleviate the burden of school debt. Bob’s many kayak river trips through the Gorge naturally drew him to support Friends of the Columbia Gorge, the organization committed to preserving and protecting the Gorge’s breathtaking landscapes.
When asked about his reasons for giving now, Bob mentioned a quote he heard years ago: “Do your givin’ while you’re livin’ so you’re knowin’ where it’s goin’," and added, “...only if you can.” Bob says the needs in our community will always be there and there is joy in giving, something he feels very fortunate to be able to do now.
We at The Next Door, and our community partners, appreciate Bob’s generosity and commitment to community. This, along with other contributions, allows us to continue the work we do and expand our meaningful programs in our communities.
